As reported in the news, textured breast implants have been associated with a rare type of lymphoma (cancer of the immune system) called Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). This lymphoma is so rare that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not recommend that textured implants be removed or replaced in those without symptoms of BIA-ALCL.

The main symptoms of BIA-ALCL are persistent swelling or pain in the area of the breast implant, that may occur even years after the implants were placed. Sometimes a fluid collection may be noted, or a lump or capsular contracture may be present. If you experience any of these symptoms, or other changes, you should talk to Dr. Nagy regarding further evaluation and implant removal (explant surgery).

It is important for all our patients to make well informed decisions when it comes to their health care. Allergan, one producer of textured breast implants, has voluntarily recalled all un-implanted textured implants. In addition, the Allergan implant recall prompted Allergan to create the BIOCELL® Replacement Warranty to assist patients with Allergan textured implants who wish to have their textured Allergan breast implants replaced with smooth Allergan breast implants.

The Allergan implant BIOCELL® Replacement Warranty covers Allergan, Inamed and McGhan implants by providing free smooth Allergan breast implants to replace textured implants. The replacement implants must be similar in size and style. For example, if you have 300cc textured saline implants, they will provide 300cc smooth saline implants, or if you have 415cc textured silicone implants they will provide 415cc smooth silicone implants. The Allergan recall warranty does not cover surgical or facility costs and is not meant for those who wish to change the size or style of their implants. The BIOCELL® Replacement Warranty will be available from July 24, 2019 thru July 24, 2021.
