The 50th anniversary of silicone breast implants has recently passed. To commemorate it, The NY Daily News interviewed great-grandma Timmie Jean Lindsey, 80, of Texas, who was the first recipient of silicone breast implants in the U.S.
At a Houston Hospital in 1962, she found the surgeon because she wanted tattoos removed from her chest. Dr. Gerow, told her she was the perfect first candidate for his newly invented implants.

Her case has been documented in medical journals and has obviously had a strong impact on the field. Since her procedure, the implants never leaked or ruptured but have calcified a bit. However, she has no regrets about the procedure and expressed her amazement at the new advancements in breast augmentation, and specifically reconstruction. She says in the article, ”It just looks so natural. They can build them up just like the real thing. I’m so proud that it’s available to so many women. It’s not vanity getting reconstruction. I think it’s necessary. It puts them back whole again. I’m so happy if Dr. Gerow’s silicone implants are what started it all.”
We are proud to offer patients the option of silicone gel-filled breast implants, since they are much softer and feel more natural than saline-filled breast implants.
